MVI was contracted by Ocean IQ to provide protected species monitoring, mitigation, and reporting services in support of the Google/Meta Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) submarine fiber-optic cable burial inspection operations off the coast of Los Angeles, California. MVI developed a project-specific protected species awareness training presentation, which was delivered to vessel crew members by the lead Protected Species Observer (PSO). Mitigation summary placards outlining applicable regulatory requirements by operational activity and species were also provided for bridge crews.
PSOs conducted 24-hour monitoring, utilizing night-vision devices to support nighttime visual observations. Daily progress reports summarizing PSO monitoring activities were submitted to the client, and all data were remotely reviewed by MVI project management staff for quality assurance. Despite numerous protected species detections in the biologically rich waters of Southern California, the survey was completed without incident. Upon project completion, MVI prepared and submitted a comprehensive final summary report to regulators within the required timeframe.
